Wix Speed Optimisation: Why Wix Sites Are Slow and How to Fix Them

Wix sites often score poorly on PageSpeed Insights. Here is why — and the specific changes you can make within Wix's constraints to improve your score.

Why Wix sites score low on PageSpeed Insights

Wix manages hosting, rendering, and asset delivery for you — which means you have less control than on WordPress or a custom stack. But there is still a meaningful gap between a well-optimised Wix site and a poorly built one.

The main reasons Wix sites score low:

Wix's own JavaScript bundle is large. Wix injects its own editor and runtime scripts into every page. This is unavoidable, but you can stop adding to it.

Heavy, unoptimised media. Wix stores images and videos on its CDN, but it does not stop you uploading a 5MB PNG for a thumbnail.

Too many installed apps. Every Wix app adds JavaScript and tracking code.

Auto-playing video backgrounds. Popular in Wix templates, they are one of the fastest ways to tank your score.

What you can actually control on Wix

1. Compress and size images correctly

Wix serves images through its own CDN and will resize them on request — but only if your theme uses the correct Wix image component rather than a background CSS image.

Use Wix's native Image widget, not CSS background images. The native widget uses Wix's smart crop and WebP conversion automatically.

Upload images at 2x the display size. A 600px-wide section needs a 1200px image maximum, not a 4000px original.

Use Squoosh or TinyPNG to compress images before uploading. Target under 200kb for hero images.

2. Remove or limit Wix apps

Go to your Wix dashboard → Apps → Manage Apps. Review every installed app:

If you have not used it in 30 days, uninstall it.

Uninstalling does not always remove the code immediately — check your score before and after.

Avoid apps that load scripts site-wide (live chat, pop-up builders, review widgets) unless they are directly generating revenue.

3. Disable or replace video backgrounds

Video backgrounds on hero sections are the single biggest drag on Wix mobile scores. Go to your editor and either:

Replace with a static WebP image.

Set the video to load only on desktop using Wix's device visibility settings, and use an image on mobile.

4. Enable Wix's built-in performance features

In your Wix dashboard under Settings → Performance:

Turbo — Wix's server-side rendering and prefetching feature. Enable it if it is available on your plan.

Image optimisation — Should be on by default. Verify it is enabled.

Minify HTML — Reduces page weight slightly.

5. Use a clean, lightweight template

If your site is new or you are willing to rebuild, choosing a template matters. Templates with full-page videos, parallax sections, and complex animations are slower than minimal templates by default. Look for Wix templates described as "minimal" or "clean."

What you cannot fix on Wix

Be realistic about the limits. Wix adds its own runtime scripts to every page that cannot be removed. A highly optimised Wix site will rarely beat a custom-coded site on raw PageSpeed score. If you need a score above 85–90 consistently, you will likely need to move to a different platform.

For most small businesses, a score of 60–75 after optimisation is achievable on Wix. That is not ideal but is unlikely to significantly impact rankings if your content and links are strong.
